Remember... (Part 1 of Good-Bye As The World Turns)
I have a friend who loves "As The World Turns" as much as I, and we would spend hours at work (many years ago) talking about our favorite characters, couples, etc. We even brought a mini-TV into work and watched (really listened) to the show at our desks. We were completely absorbed by the "Who Killed Tonio?" s/l that year. I mean, we talked about it all the time. Was it Tonio? I can't remember now. Anyway, in her absence, I'm just going to play 'Remember When' with my blog because I cannot stop thinking about "As The World Turns" this week, its last week. Maybe I'll focus on my favorite couples? That could work...first up, would be my absolute, most favorite star crossed lovers.
Craig and Sierra.
Original recipe only, I don't really acknowledge any other Craig and Sierra other than Scott Bryce and Finn Carter. Ostensibly I was watching for Lily and Holden. Like, I saw a montage of Holden and Lily set to the Rolling Stones "Play With Fire" and was hooked like that (snapping fingers). Coincidentally, if you happen to have that scene or know where I might find it on YouTube, I will do your laundry for the rest of your life. But I digress. So here I am, watching Holden & Lily...and SUDDENLY (this is an inside joke because whenever Craig and Sierra saw each other across a room, they would play Billy Ocean's 'Suddenly' - I mean like this happened every episode - sometimes more than once in an episode) I found myself falling in love with Craig Montgomery's newly discovered heroic side, his never-ending battle with his inner demons, his pure, unwavering love for the young, strong, good Sierra. It was a lovely romance only ruined by Craig's inability to tell Sierra the truth (also he slept with her mother but, you know, why dwell on the negative). Of course, Sierra's so upset that she runs off and marries her childhood sweetheart, Tonio. This act, of course, devastates Craig (and me).
Therein follows like, I don't know how long, but it felt like forever...months and months and months of Craig staring at Sierra across The Mona Lisa, the Snyder farm, the hospital cafeteria. He even dated Iva Snyder, and Iva would then watch Craig watch Sierra. It was so obvious that Iva basically would tell him all the time to go after Sierra.
There has never been anyone as good as Douglas Marland at keeping a couple so far apart they were actually still together. It was so damn good that you didn't even really mind your couple not being officially together...at least so long as you could hear Billy Ocean's "Suddenly" at least twice a week as they stared at each other.
ETA: I tried in vain to find a clip of the 'Suddenly' and the angsty romantic staring, but to no avail. I'll keep looking though.
