random ( I do this a lot on Sundays don't I?)
I'll try not to talk about TV.
Try.
1. Someone on Twitter responded to a quote that I posted from one of my favorite films, "Hope & Glory) (John Boorman - 1987 - it's his semi-autobiographical tale of being a young boy during The Blitz), it's about having four daughters means creating a string quartet. The quote is, "What can you do with four daughters? I asked myself - Four daughters! A string quartet was all I could come up with."
Anyway this person responded that you have the start of a softball team. Also that you have four son-in-laws. So, of course, I responded with the (in my family) accurate point that it's not ALL son-in-laws. Then the person replied with the softball team again. So I'm sitting here thinking about this, and, you know, she's correct... and like... we never once played softball as a family.
This is likely because I am athletically inept, and, if the suggestion was ever floated, I would have balked then cried. However, I do have one stepsister who was (is) an excellent athlete. She played softball, volleyball, basketball...all of it...and she was damn good. I think one of those teams made a state championship. I mean I doubt even she remembers that, but I remember there was an award ceremony my parents went to (I stayed home and watched TV obviously).
She's also the same sister who will never give my father a son-in-law.
*this whole dual realization is seriously cracking me up this afternoon - it's almost enough to get me to call her so she can laugh too - almost*
2. I discovered yesterday that Netflix has added about 250 films from the 1980's. That is the actual category title. "Movies from the 1980's". I'm guessing these were added because it's Summer, but there are some (mainly Paramount) titles that I have, no exaggeration, not seen in 20+ years. Strangely, I had just searched out one title in particular because I had a feeling it had never been released on DVD (I was correct), and, DUDE, it's on Netflix Instant!?!?!?
3. It's called "Joy of Sex" (Martha Coolidge -1984) It's not at all what the title implies. I mean it wants to be a sex-filled raunchfest but there's a sweetness to it that I always loved. It is absolutely bizarre to watch a film you loved but haven't seen in 20 years. I had only the vaguest memory of how it ended. I had not forgotten how utterly adorable Cameron Dye was in the film though (he's adorable in "Valley Girl" too).
4. So, anyway, I had things to do yesterday which were completely ignored as I proceeded to watch 8-10 films from my "Movies from the 1980's" category. As I told a friend on Twitter, I was afraid the category would disappear if I didn't watch all my favorites right away.
They were still there this morning when I proceeded to watch them all over again.
*cough*
5. The list as I remember. By about 2am I was getting tired. These may be in chronological order. I'm not sure any longer.
- Joy of Sex
- The Brotherhood of Justice
- Blood Vows: The Story of a Mafia Wife
*I forgot to mention that there are made-for-television films in the category which, as I am sure you can guess, is awesome for me*
- Grease 2
- Tequila Sunrise
- The Mean Season
- The Hunt for Red October
*this is actually 1990 but I'm including it because it's my favorite film and I've now watched it about 10 times this week alone and had to interrupt my 1980's films to watch it again - even sadder, I own the film and yet am still obsessively watching it on Netflix Instant*
- Tequila Sunrise (for a 2nd time - shut up!)
- Rocky III
- Conan the Destroyer (I only half-watched this because I was reading a romance novel concurrently)
And I finished it all off with a 2nd viewing of "The Brotherhood of Justice" which, if you've never seen, you should because it is FANTASTIC.
6. I'm not even telling what I woke up and watched again either. Some things are personal.
*cough Grease 2 cough*
7. Back in the old days, my mom would drop me off at one of the 5 movie theaters in my hometown, and I would see whatever movie I had chosen. When the film was over, I would go out to the lobby and call my mother and scream in adulation, "I'M STAYING TO SEE IT AGAIN!". In those days, you could do that legally (or is it ethically?) Movie theaters didn't mind. Off the top of my head the films I remember staying and seeing twice in a row are "Absence of Malice", "Evil Under the Sun", "Grease 2", "Without a Trace"... that's all I can remember now. By the time I became a teenager, it was more about going to see films you loved over and over again (but not at the same time). This is probably because I was seeing films with friends though. Before I was usually by myself.
Wow. Now that I think about it. My mother let me go to movies by myself when I was really young. This is probably why I enjoy seeing movies by myself so much. A lot of people don't do it or can't do it, but it doesn't bother me. Granted I don't go see movies by myself on Friday or Saturday nights but still it doesn't bother me at all. I prefer my own company to some asshole who keeps talking during films.
8. I don't enjoy eating by myself in restaurants. I have. I do. I will. I don't enjoy it much though. Even with a magazine or book to read I feel conspicuous and lemme tell you something about me. I do not enjoy calling attention to myself.
9. Speaking of magazines, I had this huge stack of unread mags. I've worked on this stack for 3 hours each the past 3 days. It is now a smallish stack of 3 remaining mags. Who says print is dead? In my mind, it's just delayed two months because I'm too busy reading romance novels.
10. A young friend on Twitter just asked me what Rush is. *choking* I am going to open a bottle of wine and forget that I'm this old. Maybe watch 10 more films from when I was young. Also, I'm going to send a prayer of thanks to the Gods of Rock for Rush.
Try.
